Amy Lyga, Social Studies Teacher

Hello!

I have taught at Washburn since 2008.  I received both my undergraduate degree in English and my 5-12 Secondary Social Studies licensure from the University of Minnesota .  I am currently completing my Masters of Education.   Before being hired into Minneapolis, I taught for three years  at Friends School of Minnesota in St. Paul.

In college, I chose to study and travel abroad in Montana,Guatemala, Mexico, and Scotland.  My senior year of college I had the opportunity to work at Southside Family School in Minneapolis, and it rattled my perception of what teaching could be.  The school's curriculum was rooted in social justice and the students were the core of the school's mission.  After two years at Southside,  I decided to return to school to get my teaching license.  I absolutely love what I do, and firmly believe teaching is my vocation, not my career.  I am amazed daily at what my students can teach me about life, and I cannot imagine myself in any other profession.

This year, I teach 9th Grade Honors Geography and 10th grade Honors World History.

The BEST way to get a hold of me is through my email address:  amy.lyga@mpls.k12.mn.us.
