World Language Department

In World Language classes at Washburn you will acquire French and Spanish language and learn about cultures around the world.  Since language is one of the most obvious and defining features of a culture, understanding language is key to understanding culture. We will work on listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in French and Spanish through a variety of activities. With these new language skills, we will work together toward understanding and respecting cultural differences.

Language is acquired through comprehensible input; in other words, you acquire language when you understand it.  It is an unconscious process; it happens when the learner is focused on the meaning of the message rather than the language.

You will receive comprehensible input through a variety of activities: reading, listening, asking and answering questions, stories, songs, skits, videos, TPR (Total Physical Response), dance, games and more. In this class, we teach to your long-term memory. You will be speaking French or Spanish forever!
