Co-Curricular Activities

American History and Cinema.  Learn about American History through film in this Connections class.

Anime. Participate in discussions and activities while learning about anime's influence on world cultures in this Connections class.

AP Skills and IB Math. Secrets of test taking and much, much more are revealed in this Connections class.

Art Club. Activities include field trips to museums, screening of artistic films, throwing pottery on the wheel, experimenting with art materials and studio visits from professional artists. We meet every other Wednesday in Room 325, between 3 and 4:45 pm.

AVID-9th Grade. Here is a Connections class providing academic support and fun in support of the AVID class.

Basketball life, Grades 10-12. Got to play basketball? Be fit and have fun during this Connections class on the court.

Beginning Knitters. Learn all the elements of knitting while making the projects of your choice in this Connections class.

Black Student Organization. Study African-American history, culture and do community service in this Connections class.

Boy’s Soccer. Soccer! Think and Learn! In addition to this Connections class, you must be able to play on Fridays. Hope so!

Bully Prevention. Explore the psychology and effects of “bully-type” behavior on human beings in this gathering during Connections.

Chem. Force is the Connections class that combines chemistry and fun.

Chess Club happens during Connections. Want to improve your chess skills and attend tournaments? Then this is the group for you!

Circle of Power and Respect (CPR). Happening during Connections, CPR is a place for safe, non-judgmental sharing of thoughts and ideas with a focus towards building school community.

Community Ed. Washburn Community Education is a branch of the Minneapolis Community Ed. They offer programs and classes for adults and students. Please check their opportunities on their page.

Conspiracy Theories & Unexplained Phenomena. Examine how we know what we know about selected events and evaluate claims of what is “real” in this Connections class.

Credit Recovery. Yes, there is ALC tutoring offered during Connections time and after school 4 days a week. Here is your opportunity to speed up the credit recovery process with a lot of support.

Drum Line. Be a spectacular drummer in WHS's Drum Line. This group jams during Connection class time.

Ethical Issues of "24". Discuss ethical issues and challenges in TV series as well as in national political scenarios.

Films and Movies. Examine and discuss the power of film on world cultures during Connections.

First Nations Culture. Explore the culture of various Native American Nations represented in the USA.  Open to ALL students during Connections.

Football 10-12 Grades. Learn strategies to be a successful student athlete during this Connections class.

French Culture. French Cuisine, culture, designers, cinema, tourism are some of the topics explored during this Connections gathering.

Geometric Design. Connect art, math and design in origami, symmetry work, SET and Rush Hour games, and your brain warmed up.

Girl Power. Be a strong, healthy and capable young woman in today's world.  Various skills and topics are covered in this weekly Connections class.

GSA & TOP. Gay Straight Alliance leadership and the Teen Outreach Program investigate youth development and rights in this group that meets during Connections and one day after school.

Jazz Band. Let's jam!! MWF mornings, 7:30-8:20 AM and Tuesdays after school.

Latin America Cinema. This Connections group has a Pre-requisite: Students must be enrolled in IB History of Americas or IB Spanish.  Discuss major themes of Latin American History and social justice issues through media.

Latinas Unidas Girl Scouts. This Connections group is also a Girl Scout Troop where the girls learn about college preparation, healthy relationships and self-esteem. And, of course, they sell cookies, go to camp, and attend leadership workshops.

Military Life. Learn the advantages and benefits of a military career from a WHS staff member who has been there during this Connections class.

Music Ensembles. Miller Voices, Women's Varsity Choir, The Musical, 9th Grade Choir, Concert Band, Orchestra, Drumline, Pep Band, Pit Orchestra, Jazz Band are some of the offerings WHS provides before school, during the day, and after school. We strive to have something for everyone! Bring your talents and ideas!

National Honor Society. Develop academic service to others while promoting leadership skills by being part of this group that meets at a variety of time and offers a wide range of involvement.

Native Club. Open to all students weekly during lunch. Learn about culture while doing activities such as circles and beadwork.

Open Space. Here is the Connections class that will give you a place to share what is important to you, set goals and feel good about "you."

Peer Educators. Learn elements of a healthy life style and share with peers and community in this Connections class.

Policy Debate Team. We meet after school at least once a week all year and twice a week (Wed & Thurs) between September and January. There are exciting weekend Tournaments. Here’s an extra special fact: Elective Credit is possible, as well as a Scholarship to Augsburg!

Service Learning. Learn how to develop and administer a service-learning project from start to completion in this Connections opportunity.

Silver Ribbon Campaign. Meeting during Connections and after school on Tuesdays, our aim is to erase stigma and raise awareness of mental health issues at the high school level.

Somali Culture. Learn about intriguing aspects of the Somali culture in this Connection class.

Somali Student Association. Meeting on Thursdays, from 3:30-4:30, this group is open to all students for fun, education and information revolving around Somaili culture.

Spoken Word. This Connections class will write poetry and learn how to perform.  Explore the creations of Washburn Slam Poetry Team.

Stage/Tech Crew. How to run and maintain audio/visual equipment is the focus of this Connections class, but the talented students in this group will be called upon to run the auditorium during the day, evenings and weekends.Heavy lifting and physical activity required.

Student Leaders – Student Council. Become an active student leader at WHS.  Help organize and implement student activities that run throughout the year, make plans during Connections.

Teen Parents. Learn effective parenting skills during Connections time.

Tutoring. Drop in session from 3:15-4:45 on Tuesdays, in the media center. Help comes from volunteers from a variety of agencies, including WHS staff and St. Olaf College.

Washburn Robotics Team 2549 – Millerbots. We are so proud of our Student-lead robotics team.  Fundraising, marketing, game strategy and community outreach.  Meetings are during Connections and after school.

Washburn Sports Center. A take off on ESPN’s program.  Write and report on WHS sports events. Photographs, computer skills.

Yearbook. The tradition of the WAHIAN telling the story of the past year is a long one at Washburn. Our students have a class and meet after school as the deadline nears.

Youth Alive. Connections time, Non-denominational student led Bible study, praying for one another and the school.   Community Service
