Team Fundraising and Volunteer Opportunites

Minneapolis Washburn HS and Miller Volleyball continue to grow and become more competitive.  Just a few years ago, we had difficulty finding enough players to field three teams.  How times change.  In 2010, we added a fourth team and coach to the program, allowing us to have a true freshman team.  This provided a total of 49 girls the opportunity to play competitive high school volleyball.  We finished conference play that year with our best record since 1995.  Working with local middle schools, park board and club teams, we hope to create even more interest in our volleyball program, and eventually add a second freshman team to our ranks.  The Washburn Athletic Leadership Program and our summer volleyball open gym sessions are vital to our continued growth, as they encourage our young athletes to stay in shape and maintain/improve their skills during the off season.

Our mission remains the same: "to provide players with quality coaching, uniforms, and equipment, and to conduct training in a safe, respectful and competitive environment."  Holding players accountable, we insist they perform well in the classroom too - last year, our teams achieved a combined 3.42 GPA!  Athletics do compliment academics at Washburn HS.

It's not just about players and coaches - parents play an integral role in our program too!  Not only do they cheer for us throughout the season, sharing our joys and helping us to deal with disappointments, but they help with team fundraisers and assist at our home matches.  In order to improve our "booster club" operation, we need to fill important roles for the upcoming season:

  • Concessions Manager (preferably two managers)
    • Responsibilities include: opening/closing concessions stand; helping to select products; monitoring inventory levels; ordering and pricing.
  • Volunteer Coordinator
    • Responsibilities include: identify and ensure that we have enough adult volunteers to work the concessions stand and ticket and T-shirt sales table; identify and ensure that we have enough adult volunteers for the various home match roles:
      • Varsity announcer
      • Varsity scoreboard operator
      • Scorers (all levels)
      • Libero trackers (all levels)
      • Line judges (all levels)
  • Banquet Coordinator
    • Responsibilities include: working with the coaching staff to identify and secure a year-end banquet site; selecting the menu; coordinating communication, set-up, seating and decorations; and maintaining the timeline for a smooth and fun event night.

We encourage all parents to get involved with the Miller Volleyball Booster Club.  You have many special talents which we will need to continue to make our teams and our program even stronger.  Additional roles in the past have included: creating home match programs; writing player spotlight featurettes; and match photography support.

Unsure about volunteering at a home match?  Don't be.  Concessions and ticket sales are simple; line judging, score keeping and Libero tracking provide you with the "best seat in the house" and help you become more knowledgable about our sport which will increase your enjoyment of the games.  We will help get you started with instructions and tutorials on scoring, Libero tracking, and scoreboard/clock operation.  You can review our series of tutorials and supporting documentation right here on our website by clicking on the following links:

If you are new to volleyball, it's a great way to learn more about the sport, and best of all, ALL parent volunteers get into the matches they work for free!  Please contact Katie Post at for more information or to sign-up for one or more volunteer opportunities -

Team fundraising provides our volleyball program with the funds necessary to conduct various events and activities over the course of the season, and provides a paycheck for our C squad and assistant coaches (the district only pays for three coaches: V, JV, B).  Fundraising also pays for our team practice shirts, year-end awards, training equipment and other team needs as they arise.  Additional funds are raised through our concessions, ticket and T-shirt sales at home matches.  We also welcome individual and corporate donations to the volleyball program - when we receive these, we will publicly recognize these donors on our website with a "thank you" message.

Thank you for supporting Washburn Miller Volleyball!
