Studio Art
Prerequisite: None
Serves as an introduction and prerequisite to all visual art classes offered at Washburn. The curriculum is designed to build a foundation for more advanced work by studying the elements and principles of strong design. Students will use a variety of media and create two and three-dimensional work. Written work as Artist Statements is required. A variety of exemplar art will be studied and aesthetics, history, and art criticism are explored.
Drawing
Prerequisite: Studio Art
In Drawing students will explore the fundamentals of drawing. The course will emphasize refining of drawing technique through the use of various media including pencil, charcoal, crayon, ink, watercolor pastel and printmaking. Weekly drawings and journaling in sketchbooks will be required, as well as written analysis of student and professional work.
Painting
Painting addresses the study of painting technique and the history of painting. Students will use tempera, watercolor, and acrylic paints. Focus will be on studio time, improving various painting techniques and completing long-term paintings as well as written analysis of student and professional work. Students are asked to think creatively and manifest those thoughts in their paintings.
African Art
Students will learn about different kinds of African cultures through a wide range of materials. We will work with mask making, drawing, painting, printing on fabric and making toys from found objects with a focus that leads back to specific traditions in Africa. Students will have an opportunity to discuss current events, and try African food that we will make!
