A letter from Superintendent Graff 6-14-17

Superintendent Graff has a message for families as we conclude the 2016-2017. He writes, "Thank you for supporting my vision for Minneapolis Public Schools. Thank you for welcoming me back to my home. And thank you most of all for treasuring our students and their futures. I look forward to working with all of you in the year ahead." Graduation Ceremony 2017

Thank you to all the families that celebrated with us on June 7th. It was a wonderful ceremony. View video of ceremony on YouTube (1 hour 33 minutes). View photos on Facebook. Also, due to high participation this year we sadly ran out of programs last night. We do apologize for this inconvience. We know that many parents like to keep the program as a keepsake so we ordered extra programs that are now available in the main office. If you'd like to print your own use the link provided.  The pictures taken by Lifetouch are also now available. View Lifetouch photos here!

School Supplies for 2017-2018

In an effort to keep "back to school" shopping economical for families, we've simplified the supply list for our students. We're providing this list early so families can take advantage of back to school sales over the summer. Here are the items we recommend all students have regardless of assigned classes:

  • Backpack
  • Pens
  • Pencils
  • Highlighters
  • Spiral Notebooks
  • Pocket Folders
  • Note Cards (if you like studying using a note card system)
  • Preferred organizational system (binders, trapper keeper, etc.)
  • Math Graphing Paper (if taking Algebra)
  • Math Tools (ruler, compass, protractor -- if taking Geometry)
  • Calculator for Math
    - TI-84 model is the most used/needed (escpecially for advanced classes)
    - TI-84 calculators are expensive but necessary; if finances are an issue, you can check with the teacher about a more affordable option or try to check out one from the Medica Center
    - Some are available in the media center for checkout but many students prefer to purchase their own
    - This model also works well for science needs

Students may need to check with their teachers during the first week of school about other needed supplies specific to a particular class (i.e. art classes)

Also, please note that Washburn gladly accepts extra donated supplies to help students for whom finances may be a struggle (such as our Homeless/Highly Mobile students).  We will be collecting donations at Welcome Back Night at the Washburn Cares table.

Site Council
Site Council Recruitment for 2017-2018

Washburn is seeking new members to join our Site Council for the 2017-2018 school year. It's a great way to be involved and make a postive impact on school decisions. We seek to have a representative group that takes into account cultural/language backgrounds, feeder school pathways, and gender diversity to name just a few. The Site Council is made up staff, parents, students, and community members who provide support and advice to the Washburn High School administrative team (30 members). The Site Council is responsible for working on behalf of Washburn's common good and for all students.
