The Minnesota State High School Mathematics League exists to identify students who have unusual mathematical ability, to give them recognition and encouragement, to bring them together with similarly gifted students, and to prod them into the study of topics not commonly taught in the high school curriculum. Students in Math League attend five meets where they compete in two of four events, each based on a specific topic. Each team has 8 members who are on the scoring team, but those not on the scoring team can still participate toward individual scoring honors.
We encourage any student to give it a try as it is a valuable learning opportunity as well as a fun social activity. It is a great way to meet other students who enjoy math as well as a great way to work on math testing skills. Like all other activities and sports, it is useful to have students with a wide range of abilities including freshmen and sophomores who aren't already in higher level math classes. Practices run after school on Mondays from 3:15pm - 4:15pm in room 104. If you're involved in a sport/activity that requires you to be present on Mondays, please see me and your other coach/activity leader to try to work out a system that can work to keep you involved in both. If you would like to join the team, contact Mr. Selvaag in room 104, ask your math teacher, or simply show up to a practice for more information.
Thanks for your interest in the Math Team!
