Super Bowl Safety

football

You should have received an email and phone call from MPS Superintendent Ed Graff with important Super Bowl information. If you haven’t had a chance to review them yet, I encourage you check them out as they include important information about what’s happening districtwide to prepare for this event and the impact it will have on our schools.

At Washburn, we are keeping our focus on learning and working to ensure student safety while the Super Bowl is in town from Jan. 29 to Feb. 5. We invite you to be partners with us in this effort. At this link are some helpful tips to use as resources when talking with your student and traveling around town during this time. If you see something suspicious, say something. Together, we can make sure this exciting time remains safe for all.

We would also like to remind families our standard attendance policy applies during this time. In order to be counted as an excused absence, you must provide notification to the school either in writing or by calling the attendance line at 612.668.3429. Please reach out with any questions or concerns you have.

Please have a conversation with your student about being safe this weekend for the Super Bowl. Here are some important things to know and tips for those thinking about attending any events:
  • Over, 150,000 people are coming to Minnesota for the Super Bowl.
  • With the Super Bowl comes sex trafficking, drug trafficking and thousands of security and law enforcement agents. Minneapolis is also a target for terrorist attacks.
  • Ask students what their concerns are (try to start a discussion).
  • Inform students of precautions to take:
    • TRAVEL IN GROUPS
    • BE HYPER AWARE
    • BEHAVE CONSCIOUSLY - YOU ARE BEING WATCHED
    • DON'T TAKE UNNECESSARY RISKS
    • Carry your ID at all times (license or school ID)!
    • Security is very tight. Your actions may be misinterpreted as suspicious.  Law enforcement is not the same as Washburn staff.
