WHS School Improvement 2021 (NOT ESSA-Identified)

Over the 3-year period 2018-2021, Washburn saw significant increases in graduation rates:

  • Washburn students who qualify for free/reduced lunch increased graduation rate from 66.9% to 78.2% (11.3% increase)

  • Washburn students who qualify for Special Ed. services increased graduation rate from 35% to 61.8% (26.8% increase)

With this data, we determined that our identified strategies are working and worth continuing to pursue. (See below) We made no changes to identified strategies for the 2021-24 cycle.

We re-set our goals for 2021-24 as follows:

  • Washburn students who qualify for free/reduced lunch will increase graduation rate from 78.2% to at least 80%.
  • Washburn students who qualify for ELL services will increase graduation rate from 73.9% to at least 80%.
  • Washburn students who qualify for Special Ed. will increase graduation rate from 61.8% to at least 80%.

WHS School Improvement 2018 (ESSA-Identified)

The federal bar for acceptable graduation rate by category was set at 67% by Every School Succeeds Act (ESSA)

In 2018, looking at a 3-year average of graduation rates (2015-2017) Washburn missed that bar in 3 categories:

  • Students receiving Ed Benefits (F/R lunch) 66.9%
  • Students receiving EL services 66.8%
  • Students receiving SpEd services  35%

WHS set the following goals:

  • Washburn students who qualify for free/reduced lunch will increase graduation rate from 66.9% to at least 75%.
  • Washburn students who qualify for ELL services will increase graduation rate from 66.8% to at least 75%.
  • Washburn students who qualify for Special Ed. will increase graduation rate from 35% to at least 75%

WHS choose the following strategies:

Only 2 - One MTSS and one SEL

  • MTSS: Teachers will differentiate instruction for students, so that students are supported and challenged to their abilities.
  • SEL: Teachers will use affective, behavioral, and cognitive strategies to fully engage students, especially students of color and students receiving services from ELL, Special Ed and F/R.
