Latino Heritage Month

El 15 de septiembre marca el comienzo del Mes de la Herencia Latina. Comienza el día 15 porque es la fecha en que varios países latinoamericanos celebran su independencia. September 15th marks the beginning of Latino Heritage Month. It starts on the 15th because that is the date several Latin American countries celebrate as their date of independence. Please click to read the attached Proclamation by Gov. Walz for more of the history & in respect for Minnesotans of Latino Heritage. It is attached in Español & in English.

Volleyball News

On Monday, Sept. 21 the MSHSL reinstated the volleyball season. Coach Jasmine Draper and WHS have been busy putting together plans for tryouts and a game schedule. • More info

Distance Learning Support

Welcome to the new school year, WHS students! Teachers are emailing students their Google Classroom log-in information on Friday, 9/4. Google Meet info for interactive class times will be found in each Google Classroom.

Tech Support: Call the Help Desk at 612-668-0088. They will help you figure out what's wrong & try to fix it over the phone. More technical support for students & families can be found on Technical Support for Students & Families and on the Tech Tricks for WHS Students page.

General Questions: If you have any questions, please call WHS at 612-668-3400 and we'll find the answers!

Fill out the book and materials request form if you need books, packets, calculators, or additional course materials. Library staff will reach out to you about next steps for pick up.

Fill out the technology request form if you need a Chromebook. Someone will reach out to you after you complete this form within two school days. 

Fill out the bus card request form if you need a bus card. You will receive an email when your bus card is ready.

Challenge yourself to "THE Washburn one ninety-two point five"

The WHS Outdoor Adventure Club has a challenge for the whole WHS community! Are you ready to get active, build community, and challenge yourself? Then you’re ready to participate in “The Washburn one ninety-two point five.” Challenge yourself to run, walk, or bike 192.5 miles from September 8 through October 13. You have 35 days to average 5.5 miles a day to finish the challenge. Log your miles each day -  More info

PSAT tentatively planned for January 26

Washburn is tentatively planning to host the PSAT for 10th and 11 graders on Tuesday, January 26, 2021./ The CollegeBoard has added this additional date for the PSAT test for the 2020-2021 school year due to the Covid-19 pandemic. According to the CollegeBoard, "The January administration will have the same benefits as the October PSAT/NMSQT, including eligibility for programs administered by National Merit Scholarship Corporation." Students may only take the PSAT one time during an academic year.

The PSAT is an optional practice standardized test for students in 10th and 11th grade. Students in 11th grade are eligible for National Merit scholarship opportunities. Students and their families must independently register and pay for this test (some fee waivers will be available for 11th graders receiving educational benefits). Please watch the Washburn website and newsletter for registration information in mid December.

Debate Kickoff - Sept. 17

Washburn Demands Justice - A Statement from WHS Student Council

The Washburn Student Council has published a statement about racial justice. Please click to see the full statement.

"We not only demand that community leaders address social injustices through systemic changes in the areas of police reform, voting rights & access, and economic disparities in our city, but we call on our whole school community do the following:

  • Commit to practicing anti-racism work at school and in our own personal lives;

  • Acknowledge and address the systematic problems in our own school system that create divisions and separations between white students and students of color;

  • Listen to and uplift the voices of students of color."

Five Washburn students named National Merit semi-finalists

Five Washburn students - Maggie Faust, Max Henschel, Austin Hunt, Etta Leugers and Kina Paguyo - have been named semifinalists for National Merit Scholarships, which are given annually to top high school studnets nationwide. The five scored among the top two percent of students nationwide on the PSAT exam and are among 288 semifinalists named in Minnesota.

Washburn is proud to announce that junior Nathaniel Genene has been selected as the student representative on the Minneapolis School Board for 2020!

Tech Tricks & Support for Distance Learning & Beyond

WHS Class of 2020 students Nathaniel Mersy and Ben Anderson created a YouTube Channel called WHS Tech Tricks with tech trick tutorials for students to help Millers navigate distance learning. This channel is an IB Diploma CAS Project, and just one example of the fabulous work our Millers do as part of the IB Diploma Program.

Also - there is a district Technology Support website for students & families that has software & platform training in four languages. Check them out!

WHS Welcomes new AP

We are thrilled to welcome Mr. Arslan Aziz to Washburn in the role of Assistant Principal! Mr. Aziz is replacing Ms. Tenner, who was chosen as the new principal at Justice Page Middle School next door. Mr. Aziz comes to us from Upper Mississippi Academy, where he was most recently in the role of co-director. Prior to his work at UMA, Mr. Aziz was an Instructional Coach and taught HS Science in Brooklyn Center. Welcome to Washburn, Mr. Aziz!

A huge THANK YOU to the Lynhurst Neighborhood Association for raising $10,000 to support Washburn & Justice Page families in need! The money will be split between the two schools & go to support students & families who are impacted by COVID and the uprisings in our city. We are grateful for the generosity of our neighbors.
