Beginning Piano

Course Description/Overview

This course is for students who have a) never played piano, b) never read music, or c) both. Students with previous experience playing piano may advance directly to Intermediate Piano, and should contact the teacher for details.

The course work is rigorous, relevant, rewarding, and consists of four kinds of learning:

Using Knowledge

Learn concepts, vocabulary, how to read musical symbols, and learn about musical structure.

Developing Skills

Develop a number of performance skills and techniques

Thinking Creatively

Learn to make creative choices in order to play with meaning and intention

Evaluate what you hear, and become a critical listener, making connections to the greater world.

This four-pronged approach offers a variety of ways to demonstrate learning, and ensures that music education is not strictly for those who are 'good at music.'
