School Board Approves Washburn Building Expansion

On Tues, Dec. 9, 2014 the MPS School Board approved funding to expand Washburn to accomodate increasing enrollment. Thank you to the Minneapolis School Board and all those who have supported the effort to upgrade Washburn to provide sufficient space for our students.

Nov. 15, 2015

The school district is considering a potential expansion at Washburn to accommodate our steady enrollment growth. This would be a revision to the five-year enrollment plan.

Our current students, families and staff have all contributed to Washburn’s success in recent years by building a strong, vibrant community that continues to attract new students. Growing enrollment at Washburn was previously going to be managed by sharing some available classroom space at Ramsey Middle School. However, given our increasing enrollment, Chief Operating Officer Robert Doty presented a proposal to the school board finance committee on Nov. 14 that calls for adding 13 to 14 new classrooms and creating better access to the front entrance.
If approved by the school board, the design phase of the expansion project could begin immediately. The cost would range from $8 to $9 million.
This proposal is in the early stages. Our community will be involved in planning and discussions moving forward. We will keep you informed as the process continues.
