Special Education Department changes in MPS

In cooperation with the Special Education Department, Minneapolis Public Schools Associate Superintendents and the Chief Academic Officer met and determined that the SPAN/SPEN programming (Setting 3 Emotional/Behavioral Disability (EBD) programs) throughout the district should return to building administration in the fall of 2014-15.  This decision was made in the best interest of children and in conjunction with the district’s strategic plan. In order to support all students in becoming college and career ready District leaders determined that returning the administration to the school community would further increase student outcomes for some of the districts most struggling students.

The Special Education Department is committed to this transition and in working collaboratively with building principals so they are effective administrators for the special education programs they supervise. Also to begin the 2014-15 school year the number of setting 3 EBD classrooms at Washburn will decrease from five classrooms to four which will reduce the program capacity from 60 to 48 students.  The SPED department, Associate Superintendent’s and the Principal all agree that this is a very supportive reduction for the building community as well as the setting 3 students.
