Graduation Ceremony

As you have probably heard, our 2020 graduation will be virtual, with a live streamed ceremony at our originally scheduled time of 8:00pm on Friday, May 29th. The intention is that our community can enjoy the celebration all at the same time from our homes.

The virtual ceremony will include our student & staff speakers, music by our Miller musicians, and our counselors reading the names of every graduating student as a photo of each student in their cap & gown is displayed with their name & honors. It’s not at all the same as being live, but I am confident that it will be a worthy tribute to the Class of 2020.

We are all deeply disappointed that we can’t have a live ceremony.  We are still looking at lots of possible options for how we might find a way to see each other from a safe social distance yet this summer.

Washburn's graduation ceremony is at 8:00pm on Friday, May 29th, but will be virtual. Click here for details about the ceremony, and about cap & gown pick-up for seniors. Family and friends can view the ceremony live at this link. Interpreted versions of graduation are also available in Hmong, Somali and Spanish at this link. Recordings will be available to view the next day on MPS Channel 15 and Eduvision.

Cap & Gown Pick-up

We will have cap & gown pick up for seniors at Washburn on Thursday, May 14th and Friday, May 15th. Seniors will have a scheduled time on one of those days, according to their last name, to keep things orderly.

Ms. Collins, A-C: Thursday 9:00am - 12:00pm

Mr. Crowell, D-Hug: Thursday 12:00pm - 3:00pm

Ms. Webster, Huh-Mod: Thursday 3:00-6:00pm

Mr. Pemberton, Moe-Sam: Friday 9:00am-12:00pm

Ms. Savage, San-Z: Friday 12:00pm-3:00pm

Alternative school students & make up time: Friday 3:00-5:00pm

Students who need transportation can contact your social worker for a taxi voucher. Parents will not be allowed out of cars - only the seniors will enter the building.

Cap & gown distribution will involve several important things, so all seniors should be sure to come. We will hand back items from lockers, collect items that belong to the school and clear obligations, distribute caps & gowns and diploma covers, check pronunciation of names, and take each senior’s photo for the ceremony. It will be a very quick process for each student because we have to take care of 400 students in only 2 days. Each student will spend no more than 15 minutes in the school. We ask that students bring masks, and we will have extras as needed.

All lockers, including gym & athletic lockers, will be cleared in advance, and belongings bagged in advance. This is district protocol. If a student has have something in someone else's locker, they will have to arrange to get it from that person.

We are confident that we have a well thought out plan that maintains social distancing and ensures the safety of students and staff during the cap & gown distribution process. Students will enter at Door #5 form the big parking lot, stop at each of 5 stations, and exit back to the parking lot through door #4. Students will not actually interact with each other at all, and will interact with adults from 6 feet away at all times. Adults will be wearing masks, gloves, and have lots of sanitizer on hand.

That said, if your student lives with someone who is high-risk and cannot come up to school, we can certainly make a special plan for them. Please contact Emily Palmer (emily.palmer@mpls.k12.mn.us) or Michelle Terpening (michelle.terpening@mpls.k12.mn.us) to let us know.

Even if it’s not in the way we had planned, we will still make WHS graduation special. We will share more info as we have it.
